Richard Ellis is the founder and Managing Director of Stratum Management Limited and has over 20 years' experience in the fields of artificial intelligence, knowledge management, and system design and acquisition.
Richard’s interest in AI developed out of his work in system control and automation, while working as a Weapon Engineer Officer in the Royal Navy. He gained an MSc in Intelligent Systems in 1989, and since then has been working in the UK AI community, both as part of his consultancy career, and in support of voluntary and government initiatives.
Richard has supported a number of organisations in developing AI based systems, and acting as a company focus for AI matters. He is currently working with Elzware Ltd on the development of an intelligent, natural language based system for teaching English to GCSE students.
He has been a committee member of the BCS Specialist Group on AI (SGAI) for the last ten years, and also served on the committee of the Natural Computing Application Forum (NCAF). He was also Chairman of the Steering Committee of the UK DTI sponsored Smart Software Technology Club, established to promote communication between AI tool and software suppliers and UK Industry and Commerce.
Richard’s specific interest in practical application of AI has developed out of a perception that the excellent developments in AI in academia sometimes fail to make it into practical use because of a lack of shared understanding by the technical/academic and industry/application communities.
Outside the AI world, Richard works as a technical consultant, supporting the development of programmes related to the improved management and exploitation of knowledge and information, principally in the defence domain. He is currently supporting Helyx SIS Ltd as a Managing Consultant.
In addition, he has an interest in practical knowledge management, stemming from his experiences supporting project and programme management in knowledge intensive organisations, and from his involvement in the development of AI based systems. He is working closely with the AKRI Ltd in the development and application of Knowledge Structure Mapping.
A member of both the British and American Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS and AAAS), Richard takes an active interest in the development of science policy and the public understanding (or misunderstanding ) and use (and misuse) of science. He is also the Chair of Trustees of the Micheldever School Development Trust, a charity raising funds for the refurbishment of his local village primary school.
Richard is married with two children and lives in Hampshire. He is a keen mountain walker, an avid reader of modern fiction, a pottering sailor and a frustratingly poor rock climber.
